It is not uncommon to see wild animals casually walking throughout some parts of the city. Flocks of wild turkeys are common, as are deer, raccoons and opossums. Some of the less common creatures wandering about are mountain lions, foxes, and rabbits. There are several birds that can be found nesting in the trees of the median strip on West Ninth Street, such as black-crowned herons, great blue herons, great egrets, and snowy egrets. The reason for this is because the only remaining undeveloped land rests right on the fringe of the city. As well, corridors of the Santa Rosa Creek run through the middle of the city.
Located right on the border of the city is Annadel State Park, which connects Spring Lake Country Park and Howarth Park. Annadel Park also includes some of the Sonoma Mountains. These parks are open to the public and are visited by those wising to experience nature at its finest.
